Gator Clone

by gaussmarkov

Gator Layout

Slow gear volume swells with a special trigger option made the PAiA Gator a unique gate. This work-alike uses updated and more common components than the original unit, which is no longer available. If you look at the date on the PCB, you will see that this was finished back in July. Somehow I completely lost track of putting together this project for I wonder what else I have forgotten. I’m sure there must be something … 🙂

    Hi! Please, tell me: “trig_con” & “trig_tip” – what is it? How it use?

    “trig” is short for “trigger” which is another input to the effect to control the gating. for example, you could put a kick drum signal in there. “trig_tip” is for the input signal on the “tip” of the input jack. the jack needs to be mono with contact switch (like this example in the wikipedia). “trig_con” is for the contact switch connection so that when there is no input jack an internal connection is made and the clean signal triggers the gating.

    Thanks! Then why on the scheme at once to not draw jack?

    I don’t remember, but it is a good suggestion and I will change it. Thanks! 🙂

    The parts list asks for a momentary switch. What is this used for? Is it the bypass switch, or does it provide some optional function?

    Hi gaussmarkov,
    nice project you made here, big thx.
    i i finished it this week, and the effect is much better than in SG! much longer attack delay, nice exactly what i was looking for.
    had to sub some parts,
    – 500nF cap -> 470nF+47nF in parallel
    – LM3080 -> CA 3080E

    but there are some minus too, it plopps like hell when done by schematic when u hit the bypass switch! ive added a output cap and a pulldown resistor to test, 100nF/10M no plopp after that 🙂
    then ive changed em to better values for having not a to big output impendance 1uF/100K. just wanted to test it, but by mistake i plugged amp into trigger jack, now nothing is working anymore, pretty strange. changed the TL072’s and the LM308N, dont have a spare here for the CA3080, but i will get soon some LM3080. also treshold was working a bit strange, i was only able set this between 07h and 09h, if i opened the pot more, no more effect. thats normal? maybe thats a CA/LM 3080 issue, i will see when i got the LM here. will check with audioprobe later where the fox hides.

    What exactly does the momentary switch do?

    Is there sound samples?

    A usefull gate and volume swell pedal. Not noisy except a little hiss in high level settings when the sound decays. I’ve used a LM308 as IC1 until change that one for TL081, whithout differences in the general performace.
    Another mod’s on my built:
    Level pot: 100k
    treshold pot: 25 k
    No trigger connection and no temporary switch.

    Cant you replace the lm3080 for a tl072 or some similar operational ic, removing the level pot?

    It seems that the level pot, when wired per the layout, works backwards. I will be switching mine so that pins 1 and 3 are reversed from the layout so that the volume gets louder when you turn clockwise. When I wired it as shown, it gets quieter when I turn clockwise.

    A Good volume gate. I build it for swells, and works good.

    It seems that the gain input is not designed for guitars. It need to be moded to cross the treshold with low power guitars.

    I had to reverse the lug of the attack / delay and Volume pots.

    Any ideas in how to make this effect more sensitive to guitars?

    Built this nice pedal. Unfortunately, I found that external trigger signal OPENS the closed gate, instead of CLOSING opened(((( Are there any ways to correct this?
